Nectar of the Gods – Alcohol, Religion, and Arkansas Drinking Culture with Dr. Philip Frana

0 Nectar of the Gods Alcohol, Religion, and Arkansas Drinking Culture with Dr. Philip FranaIn the spring of 2011, sixteen Honors students at UCA conducted a wide-ranging oral history project on the social, economic, and legal aspects of drinking in the state of Arkansas. They studied the history and folklore of Arkansas drinking culture, from the Toad Suck to Carry Nation to the Baptist backdoor. They visited Altus wineries, distilleries and breweries, and even Lavaca’s Giant Budweiser Beer Can. And they interviewed all sorts of people — pastors, counselors, police chiefs, brewers, vintners, campus presidents, dry county advocates, rock musicians, and moonshiners — about their views on alcohol, temperance, and religion. Phil Frana, the course instructor and director of undergraduate studies, will share some surprising class findings and explain how a “mingling of spirits” (alcoholic and religious) in the Bible Belt impacts us all.
