It’s wierd.
I only just looked this up because I was watching some old Bionic Woman episodes and took a glance at her IMDB file.
Seems Lindsay Wagner was scheduled to be on this flight but backed out at the last minute because she felt uneasy about it.
Lucky lady.

This is TERRIBLE! So sad! I wish planes didn’t immediately turn to a fireball as soon as they crash. A lot of people would survive the injuries, but the fire KILLS them!

You may be surprised but, after totaling up the insurance payout, AA actually made a profit on this crash. True.

@charliem989 Flight …
@charliem989 Flight 191 had a big effect on my life. 22 years later I met my GF who was still flying for AA. Another Flight Attendant friend B.K. was assigned to the plane to fill in for the girl stuck in traffic. But the delayed Flight Attendant showed up at the last second, they opened the door for her, and Miss B.K. got back off . I went to B.K.’s 60th birthday party that almost never was. It still haunts her terribly. My GF’s roomate Nancy S. was also on 191. We keep her pic on the mantle.
@charliem989 I …
@charliem989 I cancelled my seat on 191. I had a bad feeling that I could not explain. The week was a real mess for me working for GE, supposed to go to Venezuela but could not get my entry visa. So I decided to fly home from Albany to Chicago to LAX, take a week vacation. I told my dad to pick me up at the Airporter in San Fernando Friday, and I would call when I landed. In those days I flew a lot. I called home to say I cancelled my plans. My mom, dad, and brother thought I had been killed.
@XholynOldSchool …
@XholynOldSchool You are a idiot. The reason this all happened was because the maintenance personel didn’t detach the engine seperatly before detahcing the pylon. They detached both at once which was warned against. It cracked the pylon which went unnoticed. This in turn caused the engine to break off after takeoff. There were measures that the pilots could have taken but what would you have done in a panic? You need to shut the up and quit cursing people that are long gone.
STUPID …
STUPID PILOTS!!!! its their fault that the people died!!
so your telling me …
so your telling me that if i am beyond V1 but before Vr and i have some kind of malfunction that causes my aircraft to be in distress i should abort the take off????????

dum pilots shud have responded
I am aware of this. …
I am aware of this. In the far less fancy world of GA we cal lthis the abort point. But in the case of damned if you do FU#*@D if you don’t, I’ll take the damned anyday. But…..I am also aware being in the situation is FAR FAR different than watching it on youtube. Had the pilot cut the engine and tried to put it back down right away, it may have been bad but I bet survivable. That’s all I was saying.
they were passed V1
they were passed V1
I don’t want to get …
I don’t want to get too deep. I have to do an accident analysis report every week for an aviation saftey class I’m in. But just first though on this. ABORT ABORT ABORT!!!!! probably would have come out a little better than climbinb only to dive in.

There was a passenger on this flight who had a premonition that something bad was going to happen and didn’t board the plane. I forget what book I read this in as a kid, one of those mystery books. Crashed near the house I grew up in.

@MRPEQUOD
You …
@MRPEQUOD
You twit. What I was referring to was the fact that Rolls Royce went bankrupt due to the horrible development problems with the engine. This in turn caused a 2 year delay for the L-1000, causing Lockheed to go bankrupt. Both companies had to be bailed out by their respective governments. Lockheed’s engine choice also resulted in far fewer orders for the L-1011 since the engine wasn’t used in other US aircraft.
In short, I am more than familiar with the facts.
The RB211 engines …
The RB211 engines were fine , hard to start but superior to either PW or GE !
The initial turbine blade issue was fixed early on !
Read a few facts on what you talk about !
Before this …
Before this incident the DC-10 had already earned its “Flying Coffin” nickname for good reason. I refused to fly in them. Lockheed did a far better job of designing their L-1011 TriStar. Too bad Lockheed chose Rolls Royce as the engine manufacturer, or the L-1011 would have been a far more successful airplane.
@comgeek24
Yep, …
@comgeek24
Yep, and that procedure (detaching the engine and pylon as a single unit) was a specific no-no in the DC-10’s service manual. Yet at the time all the airlines were doing it to save time.
