Man Told He’ll Never Walk Again, Now Running

0 Man Told Hell Never Walk Again, Now RunningEight years ago at age 18, Chris was in a tragic car accident that left him a coma. After being discharged from the hospital, he began rehabilitation. Progress was slow and Chris was confined to a wheelchair for a year. Therapists at the rehab center gave up on him and he gave up on ever regaining his ability to walk. His mother, however, did not give up.

One day mom Loraine Ellingsen stopped by the In Motion rehab center and talked to the therapists. They met with Chris next door at the Victory YMCA and encouraged him to try physical therapy with them. Abandoned by his previous therapists, Chris was skeptical at first. The caring staff at In Motion soon gained his trust and began to challenge him with rehabilitative therapies to help him regain his ability to walk.

0 Lions Vision Research & Rehab Center Dr. Ava BittnerLions Vision Day Rally – Saturday – November 12, 2012 – Wilmer Eye Clinic Tour

Dr. Ava Katherine Bittner received her Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia, and her PhD in clinical investigation from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. She completed a clinical research post-doctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute, and then joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Bittner’s research is examining the relationships between psychosocial factors and day to day variations in vision or photopsias among visually impaired patients with retinal degeneration or glaucoma, and she aims to design and conduct clinical trials involving interventions for these patients in the future. Her research interests include the psychophysical assessment of the healthy and diseased visual system, both to increase the understanding of this system and to develop tools to monitor disease and therapeutic outcomes. She is also interested in complementary and alternative approaches to sight preservation and disease/symptom attenuation in retinal degenerations, and collaborates with researchers from the Johns Hopkins Center for Mind-Body Research and department of Behavioral Science.

Vision Therapy

The human visual system is complex. The problems that can develop in our visual system require a variety of treatment options. Many visual conditions can be treated effectively with spectacles or contact lenses alone; however, some are most effectively treated with vision therapy.

Vision therapy is a sequence of activities individually prescribed and monitored by the doctor to develop efficient visual skills and processing. It is prescribed after a comprehensive eye examination has been performed and has indicated that vision therapy is an appropriate treatment option. The vision therapy program is based on the results of standardized tests, the needs of the patient, and the patient’s signs and symptoms. The use of lenses, prisms, filters, occluders, specialized instruments, and computer programs is an integral part of vision therapy.

Vision therapy is administered in the office under the guidance of the doctor. It requires a number of office visits and depending on the severity of the diagnosed conditions, the length of the program typically ranges from several weeks to several months. Activities paralleling in-office techniques are typically taught to the patient to be practiced at home to reinforce the developing visual skills.

Research has demonstrated vision therapy can be an effective treatment option for:

•Ocular motility dysfunctions (eye movement disorders)
•Non-strabismic binocular disorders (inefficient eye teaming)
•Strabismus (misalignment of the eyes)
•Amblyopia (poorly developed vision)
•Accommodative disorders (focusing problems)
•Visual information processing disorders, including visual-motor integration and integration with other sensory modalities
