What medication besides Vicodin, or alternative treatment could help nerve compression pain?

My poor mother-in-law has bony growths in her spinal column that compress a spinal nerve and cause severe pain in her leg. She is not a surgical candidate. She has been on Vicodin for a long time but it doesn’t help her pain. Does anyone know of a medication or treatment that would help relieve her pain. She is besides herself. Thank you!

I’ll share my experience with Vicodin. Does not seem to help the pain much. Motrin worked much better, but the orthopedist said not to take Motrin because it inhibits healing (?). The depression is too much for me and I have decided not to take this drug any longer. I would rather feel the broken bones. Important note: I am not a depressed person normally. My general average outlook is quite positive. Until I read some of the other comments on this site, I believed I might be losing my sanity. Side effects: Vivid dreams, severe depression. No euphoria and not much pain relief. I purchase Vicodin through reputable http://www.lipmanpharmacy.com/ they’ve been very reliable so far. Check this FDA link about Vicodin http://google2.fda.gov/search?client=FDAgov&site=FDAgov-Recalls-Safety|FDAgov-Consumers|FDAgov-WarningLetters-ICECI|FDAgov-ImportAlerts-Industry|FDAgov-MedWatch-Safety|FDAgov-Section-Drugs&output=xml_no_dtd&proxystylesheet=FDAgov&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&as_q=vicodin&num=20&btnG=Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&restrictBox=FDAgov-Recalls-Safety&restrictBox=FDAgov-Consumers&restrictBox=Medwatch&restrictBox=FDAgov-WarningLetters-ICECI&restrictBox=FDAgov-ImportAlerts-Industry&restrictBox=FDAgov-Section-Drugs&lr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&sort=date
Hope i helped.

This is a serious question.Ask a doctor not people around! U can t play with ethe pills and dosage.Call a pharmacy or a doctor.Probably she is suffering of others as well and the doctor will know what is right or wrong for her.Taking advices from what others (nonprofessional )tell u,is very risky.

    In hoemeopathy,
Mag. Phos 200 (1 dr pills)
    6 pills a day for a week.
And later, every month two doses
in the morning and in the evening.

    Apply orally, Uttareni thailam in

    After fifteen minutes,
    fomentation will help relieve pain.

    I wish her comfort.

There ar medications that work to calm neuropathic pain, caused by compressed nerves. Medications such as Lyrica and Neurontin work well.
Also, there are spinal stimulators that work well, that interrupt the pain signals from the legs to the brain.
    There are also other methods.

Manual therapy will help her a lot to decompress the nerve. Taking Vicodin or other drugs is not going to make the bony spur go away. it will only mask the pain. manul therapy can help creat a bit more space so the nerve isn’t compressed.
